When a storm is coming, all other birds seek shelter. The eagle alone avoids the storm by flying above it. So, in the storms of life may your heart be like an eagle’s and soar above.” – Author Unknown

A Successful Person

When a successful person dies, how is he or she described?

Yesterday a very successful person died at age 92.  She never received a pay check nor did she measure her success by that fact.  Respected by everyone, she was formidable and powerful.  Yet in spite of her power, she was also outspoken, humble, self-less, and always put others first.

Here are some of her quotes:

On life, she said…

“At the end of your life, you will never regret not having passed one more test, not winning one more verdict or not closing one more deal. You will regret time not spent with a husband, a friend, a child, or a parent.”

About success, she said…

“Never lose sight of the fact that the most important yardstick of your success will be how you treat other people — your family, friends, and coworkers, and even strangers you meet along the way.”

On giving, she said…

“Some people give time, some money, some their skills and connections, some literally give their life’s blood. But everyone has something to give,”

About human potential, she said…

“If human beings are perceived as potentials rather than problems, as possessing strengths instead of weaknesses, as unlimited rather that dull and unresponsive, then they thrive and grow to their capabilities.”

About reading and children, she said…

“The home is the child’s first school, the parent is the child’s first teacher, and reading is the child’s first subject.”

Finally, about family, she said…

“You must read to your children and you must hug your children and you must love your children. Your success as a family, our success as a society, depends not on what happens in the White House, but on what happens inside your house.”

Every person wants to be regarded as successful, even if he or she does not become financially wealthy.

Barbara Bush was definitely one of the most successful Americans.  Although she considered herself a Republican, even Democrats loved and respected her. She was a successful person because of how she treated others and how she valued relationships.

Perhaps all of us who desire success should consider following in Barbara Bush’s footsteps. If each of us strives to be a successful person, we can succeed as a nation too.
