Encouragement to find a healthy environment on near a river.

How to  calm anxiety by calming your environment.

Recently I had a day of depression and anxiety.  I blamed my depression and anxiety on loss of control caused by deaths of two people I love and on being stuck in a place where my allergies are disabling.

For the past two days as my husband finally drove us home, I felt rotten.  So I leaned my seat back as far as I could and closed my eyes.  I thought about my anxiety and realized that loss of control was only one contributing factor.

  • Other contributing factors

I almost never feel anxious when I am in an unpolluted environment. I also feel much less anxious when the world around me is quiet.

As soon as we got home, I studied the connection between air pollution and noise pollution to anxiety. Yes, air pollution has been associated  with anxiety.

Noise pollution can overstimulate you.  It increases blood pressure and stimulates your body to release the stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol.  It also activates the amygdala, the part of the brain known as the “fear center”. Noise pollution includes the sounds of electronic devices (including smart phones), traffic, tv, etc. It contributes to anxiety, stress, emotional instability, mood swings, neurosis, and psychosis.

  • Managing other contributing factors.

If you are feeling anxious, retreat to a quiet rural place.  If you cannot do this, you can buy an air purifier with hepa filtration and remove up to 99% of the pollution and particles in the air.  Turn it on in your bedroom with the door shut.  Find a good book to read or do puzzle instead of anything electronic.

When we got home today, I felt so happy.  We live in a small rural mountain community.  It is quiet here.  There only sounds we hear are the sounds of mountain streams trickling and birds singing.  I love my home.  Here I do not feel anxious or depressed.  Instead, I feel awesome!
